Beyond Gift Aid: 5 Questions Every Church Should Ask About Its Finances

Gift Aid £1.88 Billion

HMRC’s latest UK charity tax relief statistics deliver a rare piece of good news in a tight fundraising climate: in the tax year to April 2026, charities and community amateur sports clubs were paid £1.88 billion in Gift Aid, up 10% on the previous year.

For faith-based charities, that headline is encouraging. It is not, however, automatic. The same release shows that the number of organisations receiving Gift Aid barely moved (67,650) and remains well below the 2019 peak of 73,220. Value is rising. Participation is not. The churches that treat declarations as a living process, not an annual scramble, are the ones converting generosity into reclaimable income.

1. The Headline Gift Aid Numbers

According to HMRC’s UK charity tax relief statistics commentary (updated July 2026):

  • £1.88bn Gift Aid paid at the basic rate of Income Tax, up 10% year on year.
  • 67,650 charities and CASCs received Gift Aid, about the same as the previous year (HMRC Table 2).
  • Just under half the value of Gift Aid payments went to organisations that received less than £1 million each.
  • Higher rate relief for donors is provisionally forecast at £920 million, also up 10%.
  • Overall tax reliefs for charities and donors reached about £7.4 billion, up 4%.

HMRC notes that about half of the Gift Aid increase was driven by a small number of very large Gift Aided donations. That matters for local churches: national totals can climb while a typical congregation still leaves money on the table through incomplete declarations, late claims or messy record-keeping. Civil Society’s report on the figures also notes that the £1.88bn total is 57% higher than a decade earlier.

2. What This Means for Faith-Based Charities

Gift Aid remains one of the most reliable uplifts available to UK charities: 25p for every eligible £1 from a UK taxpayer who has given a valid declaration. In a year when many donors are giving smaller amounts, that top-up is often the difference between covering ministry costs and cutting programmes.

Three practical implications stand out for trustees and treasurers:

  • Participation gap. Claimer numbers are stuck near 67,650 while value concentrates among larger claims. If your church is not claiming regularly, you are outside a system that still pays nearly £2bn a year.
  • Process over goodwill. Envelopes, online gifts and standing orders all need the same declaration discipline, or eligible money never reaches a claim.
  • Compliance visibility. Clean records protect reclaim income and donor trust if HMRC ever reviews your claims.
